I laughed out loud; I bet you'll smile—the ups and downs of potter's life.

The original bases have a white glaze under the blue, which made them too light for the customer’s vision.

I have long known that clay engages your heart, soul, mind, and body. I've felt this grip most of my life. Earlier this year, I unintentionally illustrated the connection between my body and what I made.

In February, I slipped a disc and was in much pain. I was always looking for a chair to collapse into; spending so much time sitting made me feel like a lump, and boy, was I grumpy. Around this time, I received a custom order for a matching pair of lamps. I made and glazed them, and upon opening the kiln, although they fired beautifully I knew the color was wrong for the client and that I'd be doing them over.

You can see how the blue glaze goes from light to dark from top to bottom, doing that cool glaze thing.

With the second set completed, I had the four lamp bases on the table. Seeing them together, I laughed out loud. The first set looked clunky and bottom-heavy, precisely like I felt when making them. The second set reflected the lightness that came with getting better. The curve of the pot's belly starts higher like your body feels when stretching to reach the sky. Seeing the two pairs on the table made the connection evident. You can see it too. Comparing the first try to the second, it's clear how the pain from the slipped disc affected my work, and I'm happy I did them over. The second pair look great in their new home.

“The lamps look really beautiful here and are perfect.” —Mary S.

The overall feeling of this home is serene and luxurious.

Since I made the originals in April 2021, I've redone the project in different sizes for other customers thrice. Usually, making three to be sure I have a perfect pair. I have two large lamps and two more moderatly-sized beautiful blue table lamps available on the website.

Both of the shades below are shallow drums, the small measurement is the height.
