This week celebrates International Women's Day (3/8/23), and March honors Women's History. This year's Women's Day theme is Embrace Equity, something I've been trying to do in my small world between home and studio. My lightbulb moment happened while standing in an electronics store waiting for service—the images on the walls depicted diverse groups of people working, talking, and having fun together. I've seen similar pictures at the bank, in clothing stores, and all around me. But at that moment, I thought, "Imagine what the world would look and feel like today if we saw these photographs through the seventies and eighties when I was growing up?"
I went home and combed through all the images of the students that had come to class throughout the pandemic. Then I re-did the class page of my website to accurately portray who was coming to class. I wasn't expecting this, but my class calendar filled up, and that part of my business doubled—the images we use have meaning. They say welcome, come in, and you're invited. Or they can tell the opposite without us realizing it.
To observe this month, I'm offering this #EmbraceEquity tile with the proceeds going to the World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is the most significant international youth movement dedicated to girls and young women, supporting over 10 million girls across 152 countries and is an IWD Charity of Choice since 2007. If together we can raise $2000.00; I'd be super happy. The tiles cost $60.00, with $50.00 going to charity and $ 10.00 helping me cover clay, glaze, and overhead. That's 40 tiles.
