Some Moravian Match Making

This year, the Moravian Tile Festival was canceled due to the pandemic. When the show date rolled around, the organizers posted a list of artist's websites that had participated in 2018 and 19 on their Facebook page. That's how the couple who ordered this backsplash found me.

After combing my website, they found a previous commission that they liked the feel of. We talked, and I sent them a mini sample tile of what I thought they wanted. The sample was received with excitement, and we moved on with the commission. To the right is the sample, below is the 24” x 36” art tile mural before firing, and then the finished piece.

Opening the kiln still makes me feel like a kid at Christmas, I’m always excited to get to the studio when a big project is coming out of the kiln.

I’m loving this white background glaze, white where it’s thicker and going pale gray and brownish where thin, it makes the sky feel as though the sun is moving in and around the clouds.

This year I've started making smaller versions of commissions using different color schemes. Here are the two I did for this order. It helps the client visualize their piece while I enjoy some low-pressure glazing time that creates stock for the website.

These color schemes are 12” x 18” , the top is a single tile, while the bottom is three 12” x 6” tiles.
